2016 Music Reviews

Welcome to Music Arts Monthly Magazine
This is an online version that began back in real print in Houston Texas in 1985 by the late Douglas Groover: Editor, Publisher, Musician, Recording Engineer and a true descent person that I for one was very glad to have known. Go ask Cyndi Lauper about Doug as she considered him a true friend as well.

Here is a reprint we at Music Arts Monthly feel is something worth reading and it's quite important for all musicians who value their music.
It's from "Source" by Nationwide Disc

When a major artist makes a move that goes against the music industry's trend-from label deals to management changes to album release methods (a la Beyoncé last year)-people tend to sit up and take notice. When that move involves two of the biggest topics in the music industry-Taylor Swift and music streaming-you can bet that everyone is talking about it.
So, what did Taylor do that's so noteworthy? And why should it matter to you?

Sara Petite

Petite is a gritty Pollyanna, Minnie Pearl type Bruce Springsteen rocker with an Outlaw-Classic Country style. Raised in a Tulip farming town in Washington she resides in San Diego, CA. A gifted singer-songwriter who possesses the unique ability to reach the hearts and souls of fans young and old. She has the rare gift to craft songs that appeal equally, but are interpreted differently by fans of diverse perspectives. This comes through in her live performances as well. A true original, 's music does not conveniently fit into any one musical genre or sub-category, but rather traces her influences in country, bluegrass, rock and folk, and emerges into a sound completely her own. As welcome in senior citizen centers as she is in biker bars, nightclub venues and festivals, Sara is as American as apple pie and Harley Davidson. She is gritty, she is wild, she is tender with a soul of a child.
Petite has been putting out albums since 2006. Coming Home, a single from her first album Tiger Mountain was in Universal Music of France's COUNTRY compilation album alongside of artists such Lucinda Williams, Tim McGraw, Reba McEntire and more. The same song also won the Portland songwriting contest that same year. In 2008 she put out her 2nd album Lead the Parade. 2010 Doghouse Rose climbed to #22 on the Americana Charts and #9 on Roots Rock Report. In 2013, Circus Comes to Town came out which was an honest look at a live well lived but full of heartache. She had gone through personal tragedies and was struggling to come out the other side. The title track won her a songwriting award at Merle Fest and for the 4th time she was a finalist in the International Songwriting Contest. Road Less Traveled, her newest CD comes out May 19th. I Will Rise, a song from the album is currently a finalist in the International Songwriting Contest.

CHON - The Homey Tour

at

1055 5th Avenue, San Diego

July 1st

In the past seven years, CHON have gone from playing local shows in their hometown of San Diego to a spot on the Billboard 200 and tours with Animals As Leaders and Circa Survive. The easiest category to put CHON in would be "instrumental," but that doesn't do the band justice. On their debut full-length Grow, CHON incorporate prog rock and jazz with lightning quick picking, staccato drumming and buoyant melodies, creating a sound that's fresh, exciting and wholly their own. (They even add vocals to a couple songs, "Can't Wait" and "Echo.") There are intricacies to the songs on Grow, but the band's approach to writing music is simple and organic. "We have fun writing this kind of music," says guitarist Mario Camarena. "We don't take it too seriously; it's just music we naturally write. I hope people who enjoy our stuff have fun listening to it."

Bell Biv DeVoe
coming to

June 26th, 27th, 28th

Bell, Bivins, and DeVoe formed the group at the suggestion of producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. Upon accepting the idea, MCA records wrote down the name Bell Bivins & DeVoe, but Bivins suggested they remove the ins from his name and just call the group Bell Biv DeVoe. With help from Public Enemy producers Eric Sadler, Hank and Keith Shocklee, and several others, Bell Biv Devoe released its debut album Poison in 1990, on MCA Records. The album was credited as pioneering the "new jack swing" sound of the early 1990s, combining hip-hop, funk, soul, and pop music. This fusion of styles helped to expose them to a fan base who prefer a harder edge sound.[1] Poison reached number 1 on Billboard's R&B/Hip-Hop chart, and its title track, along with its second single, "Do Me!", both reached number 3 on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. Shortly thereafter, Richard Wolf and Epic Mazur were responsible for the remix of "Do Me!" (which hit Number Six on the dance charts).[3] Poison also spawned the singles "B.B.D. (I Thought It Was Me)?", "When Will I See You Smile Again?" and "She's Dope!" Poison sold over four million copies, and was followed up by a remix album titled WBBD-Bootcity.[5][6] Richard Wolf and Epic Mazur helped create BBD's premiere album, blending rhythm, blues, pop, and rock, and Poison achieve triple Platinum success.

TLC

coming to

July 11th

TLC is an American girl group whose original line-up consisted of Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas. Formed in Atlanta, Georgia in 1991, the group was very successful during the 1990s and early 2000s in spite of numerous spats with the law, each other, and the group's record label and management. They scored nine top-ten hits on the Billboard Hot 100, including four number-one singles "Creep", "Waterfalls", "No Scrubs", and "Unpretty". The group also recorded four multi-platinum albums, including CrazySexyCool (1994) which still remains the only album by a female group to receive a diamond certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).[3] TLC also became the first R&B group in history to receive Million certification from the Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ) for FanMail (1999).
